Airbus A330 Neo may no longer fly over the sea

The restriction is gone. The Airbus A330 Neo has now received its full Etops approval to 330 minutes. This allows for more direct routes.

15. Of December. Tap was launched with flight TP087 from Lisbon to São Paulo, the regular operating with the Airbus A330 Neo – as the first airline in the world. The new flyer is a small flaw – had, at the time,; he had been awarded by the European aviation safety Agency Easa a temporary Etops approval for 180 minutes.

Etops stands for Extended-range Twin-engine Operation Performance Standards. The rule specifies the number of minutes, the types of aircraft on a flight over the sea or uninhabited area may be a maximum from the nearest airport. The higher the classification, the more direct routes are often possible – if the airline is entitled. Because they, too, must have an Etops certificate. This is particularly relevant for two spotlights.

Temporary restriction lifted

Now the limited Etops has been repealed the authorisation for the A330 Neo. Engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce has completed all the remaining Tests and inspections for a higher classification, the Trent 7000. As of now, the plane is classified, therefore, with Etops 330.

In order for the A330 Neo in terms of Etops is on a par with the competing products. The Boeing 777 and the 787 Dreamliner also have a 330-minute certification, the A350 even has one for 370 minutes. The classic A330 has 240 minutes.
